The “Modeling of Ukraine’s Power Sector Recovery and Rebuild” Workshop will take place on 1–2 June 2026 in Krakow, Poland. It will bring together Ukrainian policy and decision-makers, energy sector operators, modelling teams, and other stakeholders to address the urgent challenges of Ukraine’s power system recovery and long-term rebuilding.
With a significant share of generation capacity destroyed or disrupted, Ukraine faces major challenges in ensuring energy security, affordability, and decarbonisation, while continuing its path towards European integration. The workshop aims to strengthen stakeholder capacity by promoting the use of modelling tools to support recovery planning and long-term decision-making.
The workshop will provide a platform for dialogue between researchers, policymakers, and system operators, helping to connect existing modelling tools with the practical needs of energy planning and policymaking in Ukraine.
Participants will review and discuss current modelling efforts related to Ukraine’s power system, including long-term transition scenarios, reconstruction and investment pathways, policy recommendations for sector recovery, Ukraine’s integration into the pan-European electricity market, and modelling approaches assessing war-related impacts on electricity infrastructure.
The event will also help identify gaps in existing tools and research, with the objective of supporting the development of open-source models for better-informed decision-making.
Expected outcomes include:
- identifying stakeholder needs for power sector modelling,
- improving understanding of available modelling tools,
- outlining priorities for future model development
- and discussing short-term scenarios for Ukraine’s power system recovery.
The workshop is organised by the iDesignRES project, funded by the European Commission, with support from NTNU, DiXi Group, and the Institute for Economic Research and Policy Consulting (IER).
