On 1–2 June 2026, iDesignRES brought together policymakers, energy sector representatives and researchers in Kraków, Poland, for a hands-on workshop on modelling Ukraine’s power sector recovery and reconstruction.

Discussions focused on how energy system modelling can better support Ukraine’s energy planning and policymaking under wartime conditions and deep uncertainty. Participants explored long-term transition scenarios, reconstruction and investment pathways, integration into the pan-European electricity market, and short-term scenarios for power system operation and planning.

The workshop also provided an opportunity to identify gaps in existing modelling tools and research, and to discuss how they can better support evidence-based decisions towards a resilient, decarbonised and affordable power system.

As a flagship case for iDesignRES, Ukraine highlights the importance of connecting energy modelling research with the practical needs of policymakers and system operators.
