Event Description

  • 📅 Date: Thursday, March 19th, 2026
  • 🕒 Time: 9:00 AM – 4:00 PM (CET)
  • 📍 Location: Rådsalen, NTNU main building

The Energy Transition Scenarios: Security, Climate, Competitiveness & Justice workshop, organised by Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) in collaboration with European Energy Research Alliance (EERA) and the European Climate and Energy Modelling Forum (ECMF), is a one-day event dedicated to exploring the future of energy transition scenarios in Europe.

The workshop will bring together researchers and experts working on different aspects of the energy transition to discuss how long-term energy scenarios can better address key policy priorities such as energy security, climate neutrality, economic competitiveness and social justice.

Through a series of thematic sessions and moderated discussions, participants will examine the foundations of scenario development, the role of flexibility options such as demand response and hydrogen, and the resilience challenges that may affect the implementation of transition pathways. The event will also explore how energy visions and narratives influence policy debates and decision-making.

Event Summary

The workshop will be structured around four thematic sessions covering the main dimensions of energy transition scenarios.

The first session will focus on benchmarks and scenario foundations, discussing global and European transition pathways, baseline assumptions, internal consistency between scenarios, and the influence of future weather conditions on energy system evolution.

The second and third sessions will address system design and resilience, including flexibility options such as demand response, hydrogen pathways and multi-energy systems, as well as potential bottlenecks such as critical material needs, workforce availability and governance challenges. These discussions will highlight how long-term targets translate into real energy system configurations.

The final session will explore broader societal and economic aspects of energy scenarios, including investment dynamics, just transition perspectives and the role of energy visions in shaping future pathways. The session will emphasise that scenario feasibility depends not only on technical and economic factors but also on social acceptance and institutional frameworks.

For iDesignRES, participation in this event represents an opportunity to present its Energy Vision Scenarios, engage with leading European modelling experts, and contribute to ongoing discussions on how analytical tools can better support Europe’s path towards climate neutrality.
