The 11th International Conference on Smart Energy Systems (SESAAU2025) took place in Copenhagen on 16 and 17 September 2025, organised by Aalborg University and Energy Cluster Denmark, continuing a decade-long tradition of bringing academia, industry, consultancy, and utilities together to debate the future of integrated energy systems.

iDesignRES was represented by two of its partners. Aalborg University‘s Marina Georgati presented technical work on mapping district heating potential across Europe, updating the Pan-European Thermal Atlas with current heat demand data and feeding a grid cost model for third and fourth generation district heating networks, work that directly informs the project’s heat demand modelling in its North Sea and South-East Europe use cases. Her session drew around 50 to 60 people.

Deusto University‘s Alejo Silvarrey presented IISim, a source-to-source compiler developed within the project that couples industrial process simulation models with large-scale energy system and circular economy assessment frameworks, part of Deusto’s work developing industrial models for the Greater Euskalherria use case. His session drew around 35 people.

Together, the two presentations gave the SESAAU2025 audience a look at both ends of iDesignRES’s modelling chain: heat demand and infrastructure planning on one side, and industrial process integration on the other.
