Malaysia hosted two days of dissemination for iDesignRES in October 2025, courtesy of Henrik Lund of Aalborg University (AAU). Within the project, AAU’s Sustainable Energy Planning Research Group works on renewable energy integration and energy scenarios at regional, national, and international level, the research base Lund drew on throughout this trip.

In Kuching, Sarawak, the 11th International Conference on Low Carbon Asia (ICLCA 2025) ran from 22 to 25 October 2025, drawing 503 participants from 20 countries under the theme “Innovative Pathways to Scalable Low-Carbon Solutions for Sustainable Development.” The opening ceremony featured Sarawak’s Premier, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, speaking on the state’s carbon-negative ambitions, alongside representatives from the World Bank, Japan, and South Korea discussing regional partnerships. Lund took part as a speaker, reaching an audience of around 300 people.

On 22 October, in Kuala Lumpur, Lund also addressed Malaysia’s Energy Commission directly, speaking to a smaller, more targeted audience of around 50 people on Denmark’s renewable energy development and investment experience. Unlike the conference crowd in Kuching, this room combined scientific community members, industry representatives, civil society, policymakers, and investors in a single setting, a mix that reflects how central the Energy Commission is to Malaysia’s regulatory and investment decisions.

Sarawak’s own path relies heavily on hydropower, so a Danish perspective, built on wind, district heating, and demand-side integration, offered a genuinely different reference point at ICLCA, while the Energy Commission session gave regulators and investors a more direct, policy-facing conversation. Together, the two engagements illustrate a dissemination strategy for iDesignRES that pairs large-scale conference visibility with smaller, high-relevance policy briefings, and a reminder that the project’s open, modular planning philosophy has relevance well beyond the five European use cases it was originally built for.
