Hydrogen imports study models Europe’s path to energy independence
A newly published article by Aalborg University‘s Frederik Dahl Nielsen, part of the iDesignRES consortium, tackles how much green hydrogen Europe will actually need to import, and from where.
Published 14 April 2026, “The role of green hydrogen imports under demand and supply uncertainties in Europe” uses a multi-model stochastic optimisation framework with hourly resolution and multi-year weather data, applying logistic upper-bound growth curves to renewable capacity expansion, the same class of stochastic, high-resolution modelling techniques that underpins iDesignRES’s own energy system models. The study finds import requirements could range from 7.5 to 55 million tonnes by 2050 depending on the scenario, and that direct electrification paired with variable renewables consistently delivers the lowest-cost, highest-independence outcomes.
Published in a journal with an impact factor of 8.3, the study adds a rigorous methodological reference to iDesignRES’s publication record.
