Energy storage takes centre stage at the EU SET Plan Conference
The city of Odense (Denmark) hosted one of the EU’s flagship energy policy gatherings on 4 and 5 November 2025, as the 19th Strategic Energy Technology (SET) Plan Conference took place at DOK5000 under the Danish EU Presidency, the same Horizon Europe funding family behind iDesignRES, coordinated by NTNU.
The conference opened with a keynote from Dan Jørgensen, European Commissioner for Energy and Housing, underlining the urgency of eliminating Europe’s remaining energy dependencies. Henrik Lund spoke on “The Future of Energy Storage in Climate Neutral Societies” to 200 to 300 people spanning science, industry, and policymaking.
The 2025 conference also launched a newly adopted, more ambitious SET Plan governance structure. Energy storage is what makes variable renewable generation usable around the clock, and Lund’s contribution connected Danish flexibility research directly to the EU’s push for resilience, feeding back into iDesignRES’s own energy system models.
